After years of bidding and speculation, the FIFA World Cup could finally be making a stop in Canada.

Canada has officially announced it will be joining The United States and Mexico in a joint bid to host the World Cup in 2026.

If the bid is successful, 48 nations will participate in 80 matches that will be held across North America over the span of 30 days. At least 10 of the 80 matches would be played in Canada with at least 3-5 of the matches being played at Toronto’s BMO Field .

If approved, Toronto’s stadium would undergo renovations including seating upgrades to meet capacity standards of World Cup venues.

Toronto mayor, John Tory, has endorsed the bid which was proposed by Canadian Minister Kirsty Duncan.

Following a previous bid for the 2016 World Cup, city officials estimated it would cost between $30-$45 million to host an event of this stature. However, in the case of this joint bid, the costs are expected to be shared by all governments involved.

Toronto has recently played host to the Pan Am Games as well as the Invictus Games making this World Cup bid that much closer to becoming a reality.
