After protests and appeals, Oscar-nominated film producer, Kareem Abeed has been granted a travel visa and will be able to attend the Academy Awards this Sunday in Los Angeles.

It was previously reported that the producer of “Last Men in Aleppo,” a film nominated in the category of “Best Documentary Feature,” had been denied a visa as he is a Syrian native currently living in Turkey. Abeed’s nationality had prohibited him from entry into the United States under President Trump’s so-called travel ban.

However, after lodging an appeal, the U.S. State Department has approved Abeed for a visa.

The film for which Abeed is nominated focuses on The White Helmets; a humanitarian group based in Syria who provides aide to the citizens of the war-torn country. The star of the film, Mahmoud Al-Hattar, will not be able to attend the ceremony as the Syrian government is refusing to issue him a passport as they believe The White Helmets have connections to terrorist organizations.

Director of the film, Feras Fayyad, who is the first Syrian director to be nominated for an Oscar, took to Twitter after hearing the news regarding Abeed. He said: “Thanks for everyone involved for helping this process and thanks for all the solidarity and the effort from the American friends for facing Trump ban to help us be with our film.”

Following news of Abeed’s initial visa rejection, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in partnership with the international Documentary Association issued the following statement:

“Director Feras Fayyad and producer Kareem Abeed made history with ‘Last Men in Aleppo,’ the first Documentary Feature Oscar nominee from a Syrian directing-producing team. For 90 years, the Oscars have celebrated achievement in the art of filmmaking, which seeks to transcend borders and speak to audiences around the world, regardless of national, ethnic, or religious differences. As supporters of filmmakers — and the human rights of all people — around the globe, we stand in solidarity with Fayyad as well as the film’s producer Kareem Abeed, who was denied a visa to the United States to attend the Academy Awards on March 4.”

A spokesperson for the film has said that Abeed is expected to attend the ceremony now that his visa has been issued.

The Academy Awards take place on March 4th in Los Angeles.
